The Making Of Rockford:
Rockford’s Rock Opera was recorded and mixed on an Apple PowerMac G5 running Logic 7 and 8 software.

The recording process included the recording and mixing of all 20 songs, the recording, mixing and editing of all narration and dialogue and then, the sound design, production and editing of the whole two and half hour adventure in sound.

Technically the fact that this was all done within one computer was important as it was only by keeping the project ‘small’ in this way that one person – Matthew Sweetapple, was able to focus on the piece as a whole and do it all. In some ways the limitations enabled the process that could have otherwise become so big it would never have been completed.

Technology in the hands of dedicated creators is now allowing more large-scale projects to happen. In the past, it was only musicians like Jeff Wayne (who owned his own studio) who could create such major musical stories.

Now, with a Mac and lots and lots of time, home-based creators can deliver big audio projects and now, with the Internet and apps, they can reach a world audience too…
