Steve Jobs is not dying

Monday, January 5th, 2009

In an attempt to put an end to the wild speculation about his health, Steve Jobs posted the following letter to the Apple community:

Dear Apple Community,

For the first time in a decade, I’m getting to spend the holiday season with my family, rather than intensely preparing for a Macworld keynote.

Unfortunately, my decision to have Phil deliver the Macworld keynote set off another flurry of rumors about my health, with some even publishing stories of me on my deathbed.

I’ve decided to share something very personal with the Apple community so that we can all relax and enjoy the show tomorrow.

As many of you know, I have been losing weight throughout 2008. The reason has been a mystery to me and my doctors. A few weeks ago, I decided that getting to the root cause of this and reversing it needed to become my #1 priority.

Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause—a hormone imbalance that has been “robbing” me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.

The remedy for this nutritional problem is relatively simple and straightforward, and I’ve already begun treatment. But, just like I didn’t lose this much weight and body mass in a week or a month, my doctors expect it will take me until late this Spring to regain it. I will continue as Apple’s CEO during my recovery.

I have given more than my all to Apple for the past 11 years now. I will be the first one to step up and tell our Board of Directors if I can no longer continue to fulfill my duties as Apple’s CEO. I hope the Apple community will support me in my recovery and know that I will always put what is best for Apple first.

So now I’ve said more than I wanted to say, and all that I am going to say, about this.

Steve

Mike’s Macworld Predictions

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Here are my predictions for Macworld 2009:

  • Snow Leopard If it isn’t released, Apple will at least announce a release date. Apple *may* add some user features to make it an attractive update.
  • iLife and/or iWork updates I don’t believe that iMovie will be moved online, although it may be able to take advantage of other computers on the network for rendering using XGrid. I think there will be an online version of iWork similar to Google Docs. Applications like iMovie & iDVD will most likely take advantage of Snow Leopard features such as using the GPU to speed up rendering.
  • Mac Mini There will most likely be a new Mac Mini, with a lot of the technology introduced in the new MacBook line. It will almost certainly use DisplayPort instead of DVI. It might provide easy access for hard drive & RAM upgrades like the new MacBook & MacBook Pro, although that may be just my wishful thinking.
  • iMac Minor update, probably a speed bump or quad-core processor and adding DisplayPort instead of mini DVI. No design change.
  • Mac Pro May also receive a speed bump, new processor (16-core maybe), DisplayPort.
  • MacBook Line A Unibody 17″ MacBook Pro?
  • AppleTV Possibly new software with official support for Hulu and/or Netflix streaming.
  • iPhone New software. If there is an iPhone Nano, it will be a stripped down model which probably won’t allow you to install additional applications from the app store at a much lower price ($99?).

A look back at the biggest stories of 2008

Saturday, December 27th, 2008

The year 2008 saw some major developments in the Macintosh world. Here’s a look back at some of the biggest stories.

Apple had a phenomenal year, reporting the best quarter in company history in the first quarter ,followed by equally impressive performance in the second and third quarters, with Mac sales reaching an all time high in the 4th quarter.

The year started with a bang at Macworld expo, when Apple introduced the MacBook Air, a major upgrade to the AppleTV, and Movie Rentals in iTunes.

Unfortunately, Apple announced that they are pulling out of Macworld following the 2009 show.

Probably the biggest news of 2008 was the iPhone 3G and the huge bonanza it brought for application developers, selling over 10 million app store downloads in first weekend.

The itunes music store turned five years old and became the top music retailer in the US.

WWDC 2008 was the biggest ever, selling out for the first time. Besides iPhone 3G development opportunities, the other big announcement was Snow Leopard, which emphasizes reliability & efficiency rather than new features.

In October, Apple introduced a new Aluminum MacBook family, bringing the MacBook Air’s style & manufacturing technique to the entire line of laptops. At the same event, Apple also introduced a 24″ LED cinema display. Other major hardware releases included new aluminum iMacs, hinting at some design cues later seen in the Macbooks.

Some of the most intense competition occurred in virtualization software, with Parallels & VMWare both releasing major upgrades and allowing Mac OS X Server to be run in a virtual machine. Meanwhile, CodeWeavers gave away Crossover free on Oct. 27 thanks to the average gasoline prices in the Twin Cities falling to $2.79 a gallon.

Adobe introduced Creative Suite 4, while Apple released Aperture 2, a major step forward for their professional photo management software. Nikon shook up the photography world with their D90, the first DSLR camera that also shoots video, followed by Canon’s 5D Mark II.

Mac Software developers joined forces with MacHeist, MacUpdate Promo, and others to raise money for charity while bringing big software discounts to customers.

RAM Upgrades causing Aluminum MacBook instability

Sunday, December 7th, 2008

After upgrading my Aluminum MacBook to 4GB of RAM and a 320GB 7200 RPM drive, I’ve found that it randomly freezes about once or twice a week. TUAW confirms that this is a widespread problem related to third party RAM upgrades.

If you’ve had similar problems with your MacBook or MacBook Pro, share your experience in our forum.

Apple makes it easier for iPhone developers to give free copies

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Until now, it was difficult for iPhone developers to give free promotional or review copies of their applications, requiring an Ad-hoc copy to be built especially for the device it was to run on. Thankfully Apple listened to developers and came up with a much easier way.

Mac Sales reach all-time high

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

CUPERTINO, California—October 21, 2008—Apple® today announced financial results for its fiscal 2008 fourth quarter ended September 27, 2008. The Company posted revenue of $7.9 billion and net quarterly profit of $1.14 billion, or $1.26 per diluted share. These results compare to revenue of $6.22 billion and net quarterly profit of $904 million, or $1.01 per diluted share, in the year-ago quarter. Gross margin was 34.7 percent, up from 33.6 percent in the year-ago quarter. International sales accounted for 41 percent of the quarter’s revenue.

In accordance with the subscription accounting treatment required by GAAP, the Company recognizes revenue and cost of goods sold for iPhone™ and Apple TV® over their economic lives. Adjusting GAAP sales and product costs to eliminate the impact of subscription accounting, the corresponding non-GAAP measures* for the quarter are $11.68 billion of “Adjusted Sales” and $2.44 billion of “Adjusted Net Income.”

Apple shipped 2,611,000 Macintosh® computers during the quarter, representing 21 percent unit growth and 17 percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter. The Company sold 11,052,000 iPods during the quarter, representing eight percent unit growth and three percent revenue growth over the year-ago quarter. Quarterly iPhone units sold were 6,892,000 compared to 1,119,000 in the year-ago-quarter.

“Apple just reported one of the best quarters in its history, with a spectacular performance by the iPhone—we sold more phones than RIM,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We don’t yet know how this economic downturn will affect Apple. But we’re armed with the strongest product line in our history, the most talented employees and the best customers in our industry. And $25 billion of cash safely in the bank with zero debt.”

“We’re very pleased to have grown revenue 35 percent and to have generated $9.1 billion in cash in fiscal 2008,” said Peter Oppenheimer, Apple’s CFO. “Looking ahead, visibility is low and forecasting is challenging, and as a result we are going to be prudent in predicting the December quarter. We are providing a wide range for our guidance, targeting revenue of $9.0 to $10.0 billion and earnings per diluted share between $1.06 and $1.35.”

Apple will provide live streaming of its Q4 2008 financial results conference call utilizing QuickTime®, Apple’s standards-based technology for live and on-demand audio and video streaming. The live webcast will begin at 2:00 p.m. PDT on Tuesday, October 21, 2008 at www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/earningsq408/ and will also be available for replay for approximately two weeks thereafter.
