Apple makes it easier for iPhone developers to give free copies

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

Until now, it was difficult for iPhone developers to give free promotional or review copies of their applications, requiring an Ad-hoc copy to be built especially for the device it was to run on. Thankfully Apple listened to developers and came up with a much easier way.

Apple drops iPhone NDA for released software

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

From http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/

We have decided to drop the non-disclosure agreement (NDA) for released iPhone software.

We put the NDA in place because the iPhone OS includes many Apple inventions and innovations that we would like to protect, so that others don’t steal our work. It has happened before. While we have filed for hundreds of patents on iPhone technology, the NDA added yet another level of protection. We put it in place as one more way to help protect the iPhone from being ripped off by others.

However, the NDA has created too much of a burden on developers, authors and others interested in helping further the iPhone’s success, so we are dropping it for released software. Developers will receive a new agreement without an NDA covering released software within a week or so. Please note that unreleased software and features will remain under NDA until they are released.

Savant Open Developer Alliance Invites Mac Community

Tuesday, July 1st, 2008

Osterville, MA., July 1, 2008– Savant Systems LLC, with a visionary approach to control and home automation that emphasizes reliability and a maintenance-friendly open platform, announced its new Savant Open Developer Alliance program. The program was previewed and available to developers who attended Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). Now for the first time, all Mac OS X developers can apply to join the alliance and create applicable Automator Actions that integrate with the Savant home automation and control platform based on Mac OS X.

“Savant Systems has ignited a revolution in the high-end home automation and A/V industry by creating its own platform with serious computing power, based on Mac OS X, that allows dealers to maintain and evolve their customers’ systems,” explained Jim Carroll, president of Savant Systems. “Now Mac OS X developers can get involved. The Savant Open Developer Alliance program lets member developers apply their legendary creativity to home automation and share in the profits.”

Any Mac OS X developer can apply to join the alliance and contribute actions to integrate with Savant’s graphical programming environment, called RacePoint Blueprint. Savant’s unique configuration software, within RacePoint Blueprint, leverages several standard Mac OS X technologies, such as Quartz Composer and Automator, to control commercial and home automation systems. Developers can create controls to interact with devices, such as flat panel displays, DVD players, AV receivers, set-top boxes, Apple TV projectors, lighting, window treatments, and other equipment commonly deployed in any high-tech living space.

“Savant’s revolutionary systems have been under development since 2005 and we started shipping products to dealers this year,” Carroll continued. “The response has been tremendous and we have a list of requested Automator Actions just waiting to be created. Whether it’s a fun iTunes integration or something more serious involving security, Savant is looking for partners to share in the development as well as the resulting revenues.”

Savant Systems’ platform drives its ROSIE controllers and integrates with innovative user technologies including 5-, 7-, 9-, and 12-inch in-wall touchpanels, a 13.3-inch wireless touchpanel, and the ROSIE Coffee Table Touchpanel Controller, along with Apple’s iPhone and iPod touch. Developers interested in joining the Savant Open Developer Alliance can apply online at http://www.savantav.com/lib/docs/OpenDeveloperAlliance.pdf.

About Savant: Savant was founded by a core group of technology pioneers with hundreds of years of combined real-world experience in peripheral applications such as programmable systems, digital signal processing, telephony, switching systems, video processing, and home electronics integration. The Savant Team is committed to redefining the Home Control Systems industry with a visionary solution to home automation that emphasizes reliability and a maintenance-friendly open platform. Association of REALbasic Professionals Formed

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

The Association of REALbasic Professionals, or ARBP, is an independent organization whose purpose is to unify the profession by providing continuing professional and educational development and contribute to the community’s well being by acting on behalf of its members. The Association was formed at the REAL World developer conference in Austin, TX, in March, 2008.

ARBP began as a discussion on the weblogs of several prominent REALbasic developers, including Bob Keeney of BKeeney Software and Norman Palardy of Great White Software. When it became clear that there was momentum behind the idea, Keeney called for a meeting at the REAL World 2008 developer conference.

At the meeting, it was determined that ARBP should be formed and its bylaws adopted. Following nominations for members of the board of directors, those present elected to the board Keeney, Palardy, Marc Zeedar of REALbasic Developer Magazine, Paul Lefebvre of LogicalVue Software, and Brad Rhine of the Elizabethtown Area School District. Due to REAL Software’s subsequent hiring of Norman Palardy, he has stepped down from his position on the board, and has been replaced by Dr. Scott Steinman of the Southern College of Optometry.

ARBP aims to launch several initiatives in the coming months, including an extensive membership campaign and members-only discounts on REALbasic products and services, as well as access to exclusive product marketing resources and business opportunities.

iPhoneDevCamp 2

Monday, May 19th, 2008

iPhoneDevCamp 2 is an upcoming not-for-profit gathering to develop applications for iPhone and iPod touch using both the native SDK and web standards. This is a follow-on event to the first iPhoneDevCamp, held in early July 2007. Adobe Systems has agreed to provide the venue again this year.

Attendees will include Cocoa Touch developers, web developers, UI designers, and testers, all working together over the weekend. Development projects will include both solo and team efforts. While some attendees will wish to work solo during the event, we encourage attendees to team up, based on expertise, to work in ad-hoc project development teams. All attendees should be prepared to work on a development project during the event.

http://www.iphonedevcamp.org
August 1-3, 2008
Adobe Systems, San Francisco, CA

Attendees will be able to:

Create new applications for iPhone and iPod touch.

Migrate Mac OS X applications to iPhone and iPod touch.

Test and optimize applications for iPhone and iPod touch.
We have some exciting things in store this year - a few things we’re not quite ready to announce, but check back reguarly for updates on the event.

We are sensitive to the NDA that Apple has in place on the iPhone SDK. It is our hope that Apple will lift this NDA shortly after the public launch of the App Store. iPhoneDevCamp 2 will be held one month after the launch of the App Store. We have no intention of violating the terms that individual developers have in place with Apple on the iPhone SDK.

Confirmed sponsors so far include Adobe Systems, gogo apps, RadTech, Belkin, iLounge, Core Cases, Viewzi, ANSCA Mobile, The Apple Phone Show, and iWipes. We’re actively looking for additional sponsors to help make iPhoneDevCamp 2 a success. This is a not-for-profit event and 100% of sponsor dollars are used to pay for event costs.

The organizers of iPhone Dev Camp 2 include Raven Zachary, Dominic Sagolla, Christopher Allen, Chris Messina, Bart Decrem, whurley (William Hurley), and Blake Burris.
iPhoneDevCamp is not affiliated with Apple, Inc.
