Florida city plans to offer wireless internet access

The city of Wilton Manors, FL, a two square mile island city just outside Fort Lauderdale, plans to offer wireless internet access along the main street.

Anywhere Internet will set up a main tower at the Five Points intersection in the center of the city. That tower will beam a high-speed Internet signal to antennas that are about 11 inches tall, which will be stationed at points along Wilton Drive. The signal travels for about 300 feet, enveloping businesses, offices and shops.

City officials are also considering offering Wi-Fi throughout the Island City. If that happens, Wilton Manors could be the first municipality along the East Coast where residents can access the Internet anywhere within city limits without needing a telephone line — even in their homes.

A Fort Lauderdale technology firm, Anywhere Internet, pitched its idea of making Wilton Manors Internet-accessible at a recent city council meeting, where commissioners got a crash course in Wi-Fi.
