MailTags enhances Apple Mail
MailTags is a plug-in for Apple’s Mail.app 2.0 (Tiger) that enables you to go way beyond folder filing for organizing mail by enabling metadata tagging.
With MailTags you can add a variety of metadata to your messages:
[list]
[*] Add comments to messages. With comments you can add your own personal annotations to messages that could record what was in your head at the time of triaging the message or what things need to be done to act on this message.
[*] Set a project or category for message. This is more than just filing a message in a folder because it allows you to cross-categorize messages. You may have a mail box for action items, but you want a way of specifying the project that the message relates to.
[*] Set a due date on a message. Too often we have messages that need to be responded to by a certain date, or they contain actions that, while cannot be acted on immediately, need tickling on certain dates, However, in most email programs it is unweidly to create and manage “tickle” folders to make sure due dates don’t get missed.
[*] Set your priorities. While Mail does display a messages priority. That priority is set by the sender, and amazingly enough, it can’t be changed! MailTag adds a priority tag so you can decide what is important.
[*] Use Tiger’s system wide spotlight engine to look for words in comments, project labels, and due dates.
[*] Use the search field in Mail to look for words that occur in either the body or comments
[*] Create a smart folder based on project.
[*] Create a smart folder based on due date. For example, You can create a smart folder that shows all messages that have a due date that is within 5 days of today. This folder gets updated constantly to make sure that you can’t bury important items.
[*] Create a smart folder based on priority equal, above or below.

MailTags can also be set via mail rules. With MailTags installed, simply add a rule action for setting different meta data tags. Using different criteria, you can keep things in your inbox for but tag it for different projects.
MailTags adds a simple side bar to each message. Use can use this sidebar to quickly tag messages with the information you want. Edit the MailTags preferences to set different projects.
MailTags also adds specific criteria to the creation of Smart Mailboxes. When you create a smart mailbox, you can use these new criteria to access the metadata tha MailTags adds to Mail.
MailTags extends the capability of Mail.app so that it knows that comments and other metadata belong to a message. When you move a message, all your metadata moves with it. You can Search Metadata on different fields, and you can create Smart Mailboxes based on the metadata.
