Install a personal wiki on your Mac

A personal wiki can be a useful place to store notes, links, and other bits of information. It’s very easy to install a wiki on your Mac using PmWiki.

Unlike most Wiki software, PmWiki doesn’t require a database and will work with Mac OS X’s built-in web server. It also doesn’t require any configuration. Simply download the latest version from www.pmwiki.org and unzip all of the files into either your Sites folder or /Library/Webserver/Documents.

If you don’t already have PHP enabled, edit /etc/httpd/httpd.conf and look for the following lines. Uncomment them by removing the ‘#’ at the beginning.

#LoadModule php4_module libexec/httpd/libphp4.so

#AddModule mod_php4.c

Finally, stop & restart personal web sharing from the sharing preference panel.

Once PmWiki is installed and PHP enabled, open pmwiki.php from the directory you installed it into with your web browser. It will create all of the data files, automatically configure itself, and display the wiki home page. You can browse the online documentation to find out how to use it and customize it.
