turingart released build 0.9.8/28 of its network monitor solution Server Scout
Kiel, Germany, 5th of Januar 2007 - turingart releases build 0.9.8/28 of Server Scout, a graphical network monitoring solution for Mac OS X.
While Mac OS X comes with a set of easy to use network utilities, these tools are mostly not applicable to monitor a whole set of local or internet devices/systems. Other tools, especially those accesible through the UNIX command line [CLI], are far too complex to make a typical OS X user feel comfortable.
Server Scout - former name: ‘Apache Server Watcher’ - tries to fill this gap by means of a fully graphical system monitoring environment.
Server Scout uses a ‘Repository’ as a central inventory of devices or services to monitor. These sensors
- TCP Latency sensor : Monitors a TCP port of a system specified by an IP or FQDN [fully qualified domain name, e.g. www.myServer.com]
- HTTP sensor : Monitors the availability of a service specified by an URL [HTTP address]
- Apache ’server-status’ sensor : Gathers information by means of the ’server-status’ module of the Apache web-server
- Generic sensor : Monitors a generic web-server by means of an extendable protocol [PHP sample included]
Additionally, Server Scout’s ‘Workbench’ provides tools to draw network diagrams. Workbench diagrams are active, since the state of devices gets marked by icons. As soon as a device fails, Server Scout draws a warning sign or uses the notification system GROWL to indicate a problem.
To make a network administrator’s live as easy as possible, sensors added to Workbench get enriched by a configureable set of attached commands. Moreover, a ‘Network Discovery’ feature scans networks regarding devices.
The latest build comes with a ‘MySQL explorer’ which provides a quick method to inspect a MySQL database, an optimized graphical user interface [GUI] and a log-file database.
The current preview release 0.9.8 [build 28] is restricted to an active monitoring period of 30 minutes.
