Desktop Transporter 2.5 Adds Bookmarks and More

Coeur d’Alene (Idaho, USA), July 26, 2007 – DEVONtechnologies, LLC releases Desktop Transporter 2.5, its remote desktop solution, with new features and some bug and compatibility fixes.

Version 2.5 of Desktop Transporter adds a number of features that have been frequently requested by the users. Bookmarks make it easy to connect to remote Macs that are not located on the local area network and available via Bonjour. Sleeping Macs can even be woken up over the network or over the Internet as long as they are physically connected to the local network. Administrators managing a whole network full of Macs will love the ability to scale the thumbnail pictures in the Bonjour browser for a better overview, and they will enjoy the new AppleScript support that allows them to control Desktop Transporter from within their workflow.

Desktop Transporter 2.5 also makes sharing desktops over the Internet easier. It fully supports NAT-PMP for automatically configuring the necessary port forwarding. Port forwarding creates an outside connection that the external Mac uses to get access to the to-be-controlled Mac inside the network. NAT-PMP is currently available in all Apple Airport base stations as well as in a number of other routers.

Finally, version 2.5 allows sharing desktops right away at boot time or when users log in, and it fixes a common problem with Parallels Desktop 3.0 and the additional virtual network connections it installs.

ABOUT DESKTOP TRANSPORTER

Desktop Transporter is a remote desktop solution that allows users to use other Macs on either the local network or the Internet without physically accessing them. Like the much more expensive Apple Remote Desktop, Desktop Transporter shows the screen of the remote Mac either in a window or in full screen and allows the user to interact with the other computer as if it was the local one.

A menu extra makes it possible to access remote Macs without launching the main Desktop Transporter application, while a background helper application takes care of sharing desktops even when the menu extra and main application are not running. Using Bonjour, the presence of a shared Mac on the local network is made known, making it unnecessary to pass IP addresses around. In addition, Desktop Transporter ’survives’ Fast User Switching. A shared desktop remains shared even if the user switches to another user account.

Other features of Desktop Transporter, which is optimized for both Intel and PowerPC bases Macs, include: Clipboard synchronization for text and graphics in both directions, hardware acceleration, and support for non-English keyboards. The latter is one of the main drawbacks of free solutions such as VNC when used outside English-speaking countries.

Desktop Transporter was developed by Norwegian Mac developer Daniel Stødle and it is distributed by DEVONtechnologies, LLC. All rights on Desktop Transporter remain with Daniel Stødle.
