Apple’s market share reaches record high
Apple’s share of the operating system market grew 3.34% in November to hit a record 6.81%, compared to 5.39% for November 2006, according to the results of a Net Applications survey. This represents the highest market share in Apple’s steady climb, which appears to be almost directly proportional to a slightly declining Microsoft Windows installed base.
Microsoft’s Windows in its various flavors continues to dominate with a 92.42% share, as measured by the Web metrics firm. Among the operating systems gathered in the “other” category are Linux (.57%), Apple’s iPhone (.09%), Sony’s Playstation (.02%), SunOS (.01%) and Nintendo’s Wii (.01%).
Windows XP topped the listing, with over 78 percent of the online market. Windows Vista was a distant second, with just over 9 percent. Earlier this year, analysis firm IDC revealed that Apple’s share of the US personal computer market grew 26.2 percent year-over-year, making Apple the 4th largest vendor in terms of unit shipments with 5.6 percent of the market.
