Replacing a MacBook with a MacBook Pro
While David Alison has loved his MacBook his daughter made a hard case for getting it as a hand-me-down, leaving him with no choice but to buy a new MacBook Pro as a replacement. Read David’s comparison of the two machines, helpful if you are trying to decide between getting a MacBook or MacBook Pro in the near future.

After WWDC I’m considering switching to either a MacBook or MacBook Air and keeping my MacBook Pro in the office. It’s a great machine, but after carrying it around several hours a day, my back and shoulders were sore. The MacBook is almost as fast as the MBP (except for the video), and I can get a 250G drive, which is better than the 200G in my MBP, although it isn’t that much lighter.

If your main concern is the weight then the Air is the best bet, though it really is a compromise machine. A MacBook is only .4 pounds lighter than a 15″ MBP so the weight savings is not too large. Make sure you factor in the weight of the power supply to get the true weight of your travel set up though. I highly recommend talking to someone that’s lived with the MacBook Air for a while to see if it will do the job.
Negatives I’ve heard on it is that it cannot handle doing video for very long (about 1.5 hours) before having to shut down due to heat. If you are flying and want to watch a movie on the machine that could be a big negative.
Good luck Mike!
