Easy iPhone Tethering for AT&T users

If your iPhone is running 3.0, it’s very easy to enable internet tethering on AT&T’s network with no ugly hacks. First you’ll need to download this carrier settings file from gizmodo.

Next, quit iTunes and enter the following command in terminal:

defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE

Contrary to many articles, you don’t need to install a pre-release version of iTunes.

When you restart iTunes, connect your iPhone and you’ll be able to option-click the Restore button to choose the .ipcc file in that disk image. Rather than doing a full restore of your iPhone, it will simply update the carrier settings. If the update is successful, the Network page under general settings will show an Internet Tethering option.

iPhone Tethering!

Have fun!

Thanks to AppleNova for the terminal trick.

  • That’s awesome! Thanks, Mike!

  • I just tried this with my MacBook and Bluetooth.
It works. It’s slow, but it works.

  • Does this work on the non-3G phones?

  • cjcarbone

Is this for Mac only, or is there a way for PC to do the same thing?

  • I’ve heard that it won’t work on a 2G iPhone & I’m not sure how to do it on a PC.

  • How about an “undo” how-to for this one?

  • timdaw

I just did this and mine also says ‘Additional usage charges may apply.’ Any ideas on this?

How or where do I find the .ipcc file

Worked for me and I have a second generation iPhone not the new one. Great job, guys!

I’m guessing that this method will NOT work on the first generation iPhone? Anyone have any luck on a EDGE version?

That was truly awesome. The directions were clear and complete. It worked right off just the like instructions said it would. Works and looks just like an official AT&T tethering enabled update probably would. I have a IPhone 3GS and now don’t have to wait for the “official” AT&T tethering enabled update. I just wonder about any possible additional AT&T IPhone tethering charges, as a previous comment pointed out. I didn’t see any “additional charges may apply” warning on IPhone or on my Mac when using tethering. Probably a good idea to check your latest AT&T IPhone charges statement online to make sure about any possible tethering charges!

Here’s a way to get tethering and Visual Voicemail to work at the same time on IPhone 3.0. If you set IPhone up to be able to tether (following the instructions posted at top of this page), the Visual Voicemail APN in Cellular Data” settings is set to wap.cingular and tethering is enabled but now Visual Voicemail doesn’t work. To re-enable VM, you have to reset the VM APN in “Cellular Data” settings to acds.voicemail. At this point, now VM works but not internet tethering. To get both of them to work at the same time at this point, click “Reset Settings” at bottom of the Cellular Data settings window. The VM APN is reset back to wap.cingular but now internet tethering and Visual Voicemail work at the same time. After a short time (10 minutes or so) Visual Voicemai will stop working. You’ll then need to reset the VM APN setting back to acds.voicemail for VM to work again. Even though they don’t work at the same time for long, this is still an easy way to switch back and forth between using Visual Voicemail or tethering.

Man, you totally saved me on this. I didn’t notice the visual VM was not working until today…after having enabled tethering 3 weeks ago. I called AT&T and after about 25 mins with customer service then 45 mins with tech support, neither could figure out the problem. Before stopping at an ATT store to test my SIM I checked back on here to see if it was related to enabling tethering. Thanks so much for posting this!!!

On a side note, I’m really bewildered that the tech support guy didn’t ask what my settings in the “Cellular Data” menu were, that would have cleared everything up.

  • great, yet my voice mail will not work now!

  • I find my voicemail seems to work pretty randomly. Right now I have both working without that settings change. Tethering came in very handy yesterday when my Comcast cable was out for several hours.

My voicemail is out and my 3g has to be re set every 10 minutes.. Any help?

  • ducati997

Well this is the worst way to set up tethering. Can you plase tell me how to undo this.
