Patent filing hints that Apple still be considering plans for an ‘AirPower’ : Apple World Today

Apple has been granted a patent that hints that the tech giant may still be considering a revival of its “AirPower”plans. The patent (number 10,897,148) is for “wireless charging mats with multi-layer transmitter coil arrangement.”
The AirPower was originally announced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone X. It was supposed to be able to charge a Qi-compatible iPhone, an Apple Watch, and a pair of AirPods (in a special wireless charging case) at the same time regardless of where they were placed on the pad. However, there was constant rumors of production, engineering, and manufacturing difficulties. Seems those rumors were right, as Apple announced in March 2018 that work on the device was being canceled as, in Apple’s words, “will not achieve our high standards.
Heres the summary of patent number 10,897,148: “Embodiments describe a wireless charging device including: a housing having an outer perimeter and a charging surface within the outer perimeter, the housing including a first wall and a second wall that define an interior cavity; and a transmitter coil arrangement disposed within the interior cavity and below the planar charging surface.
“The transmitter coil arrangement includes: a plurality of transmitter coils arranged in different layers, each transmitter coil having a first termination end, a second termination end, and a coil of wire that winds from an inner diameter to an outer diameter between the first and second termination ends; where the first termination end of each transmitter coil is disposed within the inner diameter of its respective coil of wire and the second termination end of each transmitter coil is disposed outside the outer diameter of its respective coil of wire.”
