Apple makes huge strides with visionOS 2 for Apple Vision Pro
visionOS 2 delivers a huge productivity boost for Apple Vision Pro users with new capabilities coming to Mac Virtual Display, mouse support, and more.
Apple earlier this month previewed visionOS 2, a major update to Apple Vision Pro that introduces a powerful way for users to create spatial photos with the images already in their library, intuitive hand gestures to easily access important information at a glance, and new features for Mac Virtual Display, Travel Mode, and Guest User. Vision Pro users can quickly and easily find their favorite spatial photos in the redesigned Photos app, manage information across all of their accounts with the new Passwords app, access new privacy tools in Safari, and experience new capabilities in popular apps, including Apple TV and Mindfulness.
Mark Gurman for Bloomberg News:
Though it didn’t grab the spotlight at the WWDC event, the visionOS 2 update is a big improvement…
• The new gestures for accessing the Home View and Control Center represent a significant advance. Now you can raise your hand and touch your index finger and thumb to see all your apps. That’s a big improvement over needing to constantly lift your arm and hit the physical dial. Likewise, you no longer need to strain your eyes up to launch Control Center. Once you lift your hand, you can flip it over to see the time, battery life and volume control. And you can tap your fingers again to open Control Center.
• You can finally rearrange your icons and place iPad apps on the main Home View. This means you can get to the apps you want a lot more quickly. It’s amazing this ability wasn’t present in the first version.
• You can see your keyboard — either an external one or the one on your laptop — in a fully immersed environment. That’s a huge benefit. Apple also is preparing a new wide-screen view for the Mac Virtual Display that should be very useful (though it’s not yet part of the beta test)…
Given how quickly Apple has been able to improve visionOS since the first version launched in February, I’m now a bit more optimistic about the device and excited to use it more. Still, these are all just software enhancements. The device has a long way to go in terms of hardware. The Vision Pro is too heavy, the battery life is too short, and it remains cumbersome to boot up and start using. But given the strides made so far, I think Apple will eventually figure out how to solve these challenges.

MacDailyNews Take: Refine the operating system and the software while working on reducing the size and weight of the hardware – which will take years, but Apple will eventually get there if they ignore the relatively low sales and stick to Steve Jobs’ vision.
