Apple’s App Store chief exits as company reorganizes amid regulatory scrutiny
In a significant development in the tech industry, Apple’s VP in charge of the App Store is leaving as the company reorganizes to respond to changes in global regulations.
Apple’s App Store has been a central part of its business model, and changes in leadership, especially in response to global regulations, often signal significant shifts in strategy.
Mark Gurman for Bloomberg News:
Matt Fischer, who has run the App Store business since 2010, is leaving the iPhone maker in October, according to people with knowledge of the matter, who declined to be named discussing unannounced moves. The App Store group is being split into two teams: one overseeing Apple’s own store and another responsible for alternative app distribution.
Phil Schiller, the Apple executive who is ultimately responsible for the App Store, is making the changes in response to regulators forcing Apple to allow alternative stores and payment methods for apps on the iPhone, iPad and the company’s other devices.
MacDailyNews Take: Ultimately, Apple, and Apple iPhone users will benefit from the existence of third-party app stores as they spread around the world.
Apple needs to stop wasting money on fighting the inevitable and embrace change.
Those who want safety, security, and privacy will stick to Apple’s App Store, but a single point of control is always a danger, especially when it comes to capricious censorship (see: pre-Musk Twitter, Apple’s App Store in China, etc.).
iPhone and iPad users must, like Mac users, have the ability to install third-party apps; even if they never do, for it will keep Apple honest. The ability to ban an app loses all power when it’s simply available in another App Store. – MacDailyNews, December 13, 2022
