Apple looks to less expensive displays for lower-end Apple Vision

Apple Vision Pro features a pair of advanced, custom micro‑OLED displays deliver more pixels than a 4K TV to each eye — for stunning clarity.

According to industry sources reported by The Elec, Apple has received a glass board-based OLED panel from Japanese manufacturer JDI for Apple Vision prototype testing. This panel is likely intended for a more affordable mixed reality device, possibly a future iteration of the Vision Pro.

The new panel boasts a resolution of approximately 1,500 pixels per inch (ppi), significantly lower than the current Vision Pro’s impressive 3,391ppi. This suggests a potential budget-friendly mixed reality headset from Apple in the works.

Gijong Lee for The Elec:

JDI’s sample also used technologies used by Sony, a key supplier of image sensors and OLED on silicon (OLEDoS) to Cupertino, the sources said.

JDI’s sample likely has a lower resolution as it uses glass instead of silicon for the board.

Apple had also sent a request for information to Samsung Display earlier this year to request the development of an OLEDoS with 1,700ppi resolution.

JDI’s sample show that Cupertino may ultimately opt for glass instead of silicon for the OLED panel on its budget model due to price concerns.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple currently uses OLEDoS from Sony for the Apple Vision Pro.
