Netflix hikes subscription prices across the board
Netflix is once again increasing its subscription prices. Effective immediately, the entry-level plan with ads will now be priced at $7.99 per month, up from $6.99, while the premium plan, featuring 4K streaming, will jump to $24.99 per month from $22.99.
Netflix Price Increasea:
• Standard with ads: $7.99 (previously $6.99) per month
• Standard without ads: $17.99 (previously $15.49) per month
• Premium: $24.99 (previously $22.99) per month
These price adjustments apply to customers in the United States, Canada, Portugal, and Argentina. In their shareholder letter released today, Netflix justified the price hike as a means to fund further content investment:
As we continue to invest in programming and deliver more value for our members, we will occasionally ask our members to pay a little more so that we can re-invest to further improve Netflix. To that end, we are adjusting prices today across most plans in the US, Canada, Portugal and Argentina.
This announcement coincides with Netflix’s report of impressive Q4 2024 earnings. The company added 18.9 million new subscribers, significantly surpassing the expected 9.6 million. This brings their total to 302 million paid subscribers globally. Revenue for the quarter reached $10.25 billion, exceeding the forecasted $10.11 billion, with earnings-per-share at $4.28 against an estimated $4.20. Additionally, Netflix announced a new $15 billion share buyback program.
MacDailyNews Take: As long as enough people keep subscribing, Netflix’s price increases will continue.
At just $9.99 / month, the high-quality, ad-free Apple TV+ service looks like even more of a tremendous bargain.
