Apple’s next-gen Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra chips coming as soon as this week

Bloomberg News’ Mark Gurman reports that a refreshed Mac Studio might debut as early as this week. The updated model is anticipated to feature the M4 Max chip, originally introduced in the 2024 MacBook Pro lineup, though Apple reportedly isn’t ready to roll out an M4 Ultra chip. Instead, a variant of the Mac Studio could come equipped with an M3 Ultra chip—a new addition, despite not belonging to the M4 series, as Apple skipped releasing an M3 Ultra alongside the M3 lineup. Currently, both the Mac Studio and Mac Pro rely on the M2 Ultra chip.
It’s not an “Air” — but the new Mac Studio, codenamed J575, appears to be imminent. It could be announced as early as this week along with the new MacBook Airs. There are signs these will come with an M4 Max but that its new Ultra chip will actually be an M3 Ultra.
With an M3 Ultra going into the Mac Studio, Apple could differentiate from the Mac Pro, which could then get the M4 Ultra. Right now, the Mac Studio and Mac Pro oddly both have the M2 Ultra and same overall performance.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple’s “Ultra” chips have traditionally been created by pairing two “Max” chips using the UltraFusion interconnect, but the M3 Max lacks this feature, preventing it from being doubled up. As a result, the M3 Ultra is expected to be a standalone chip, marking a shift from the design of previous Ultra chips Apple has released.
Since the M3 Ultra won’t simply be two M3 Max chips combined, its performance profile remains somewhat uncertain, though this approach gives Apple greater leeway to adjust CPU cores and boost GPU capabilities. According to Gurman, Apple might choose the M3 Ultra for the Mac Studio to differentiate it from a future Mac Pro equipped with an M4 Ultra chip.
