Electronics imported to the U.S. for companies such as Apple will be exempt from Trump tariffs
CNN reports that electronics imported to the U.S. for companies such as Apple will be exempt from President Donald Trump’s tariffs, according to a US Customs and Border Protection notice posted yesterday.
The exemption applies to products entering the United States or removed from warehouses as early as April 5, according to the notice.
“Big Tech firms like Apple, Nvidia, Microsoft and the broader tech industry can breathe a huge sigh of relief this weekend into Monday,” Wedbush told CNN. “A big step forward for US tech to get these exemptions and the most bullish news we could have heard this weekend…now onto the next step in negotiations on the broader China tariff war which will take a number of months at least.”
iPhones, Macs, iPads, Apple Watch, and other Apple devices won’t be subject to the 125% tariffs that have been put in place on imported Chinese goods. What’s more, Apple have to pay the 10% reciprocal tariffs that are in place for goods from other countries.
However, Bloomberg saysthe exemptions could be temporary and the Trump administration could be planning for new, lower tariffs on electronics and other goods from China. The order also doesn’t exempt companies from the 20% “fentanyl” fee imposed on China, which was an earlier penalty, so Apple will still have to pay this.
