Apple looking at reworking Safari to directly support AI-powered search services

Apple is looking at reworking Safari to directly support AI-powered search services, according to Bloomberg.

Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of Internet search and services, said Apple is looking at refocusing on AI-powered search engines, the article adds. One of the reasons; searches on Safari dipped for the first time in April 2025. Cue thinks this is due to users switching to AI services.

He thinks that AI services such as ChatGPT, Perplexity (with whom Apple is already talking), and Claude will eventually replace conventional search engines like Google. As a result, Apple will need to add them as options in Safari in the future. 

Cue doesn’t think AI options will be the default, but will be added to a list of options. However, they still need improving, so Google should remain the default search engine in Google for now.
