Apple boosts iPhone trade-in discounts in China
Apple has announced additional trade-in discounts for new iPhone models in China, effective until June 18, 2025, as stated on its website. This strategic move aims to bolster demand in the world’s largest smartphone market, where Apple faces intense competition from iPhone knockoff peddlers like Huawei and Xiaomi.
The discounts, ranging from 1,000 to 5,700 yuan ($139-$791), apply to trades of iPhone 12 or later models. For instance, the iPhone 15 Pro Max now offers up to 5,700 yuan in trade-in value, up from 5,625 yuan, while the iPhone 15 Pro reaches 4,750 yuan.
The initiative comes as Apple faces declining market share in China, dropping to 14.1% in Q1 2025, trailing Huawei (19.4%) and Xiaomi (16.6%). This follows a 9% drop in Apple’s China shipments, while competitors posted significant gains.
The iPhone trade-in discounts in China align with China’s “618” shopping festival, a major retail event, and complement government subsidies offering up to 500 yuan for smartphones under 6,000 yuan. Apple’s pricing, such as the iPhone 16 Pro at 5,999 yuan, strategically qualifies for these subsidies, aiming to regain ground in the Chinese market.
