Notable apps and updates, Nov. 2-7

On a regular basis, Apple World Today posts a list of notable new apps or app updates that have been released. They may not necessarily be new, but they’re popular and deserve mention. Here are this week’s picks.

macOS

St. Clair Software has released Default Folder X 5.5, an update to their autility for macOS (10.10 and higher).

It enhances the file dialogs in all macOS applications. It provides navigation to your files, previews, integrated Spotlight tagging, and more. Default Folder X’s custom keyboard shortcuts put favorite and recent folders at your fingertips. Version 5.5 delivers support for macOS 11.0 Big Sur and Apple Silicon-powered Macs, and now tracks cloud-synced files.

Default Folder X 5.5 is a free update for existing version 5 users. New licenses are US$34.95; upgrades from version 4 and prior are $14.95.

Pubblog has announced MailSteward 14, an update to the company’s email archiving solution for the Mac.

It archives email in a relational database for access and backup of all your email. Version 14 is fully compatible with macOS 10.15 (Big Sur). This release also includes a better onloading experience, a newly revised manual, and a number of bug fixes.

MailStewart 14 comes in three versions, MailSteward Lite (US$24.95), MailSteward ($49.95), and MailSteward Pro ($99.95) available for purchase in the pubblog online store. Regular MailSteward, using SQLite, can handle large volumes of e-mail, 250,000 or more but for very large volumes which require an industrial-grade relational database server, MailSteward Pro is the best solution. MailSteward Pro requires MySQL database server software to be installed and running.

Zevrix Solutions has released ArtOptimizer 3.1.9 for Adobe Illustrator, a compatibility update to company’s image processing tool for Adobe’s flagship vector design software.

ArtOptimizer helps users reduce the size of Illustrator links and automate complex image transformations. The app offers image format and color conversion, batch processing, settings presets, duplicate links processing, and much more. Version 3.1.9 adds compatibility with Illustrator and Photoshop 2021.

ArtOptimizer can be purchased from the Zevrix website for US$120, as well as from authorized resellers and Adobe Exchange. Licensed users of earlier versions can upgrade to ArtOptimizer 3 for $60. A demo is available for download. ArtOptimizer requires macOS 10.8-10.15 and Adobe Illustrator/Photoshop CS5-2021.

Recosoft has rolled out PDF2ID 2021, the latest version of the company’s PDF-to-InDesign conversion plug-in for Adobe InDesign 2021. 

PDF2ID converts PDF and Windows XPS files into fully editable InDesign files allowing PDF and XPS file content recovery and reuse within InDesign. PDF2ID is the de-facto PDF conversion plug-in for InDesign. This allows anyone to open, convert and edit PDF & XPS documents in InDesign.

PDF2ID 2021 incorporates support for Adobe InDesign 2021 while supporting InDesign CC through CC 2020 for both macOS and Windows. Additionally, PDF2ID 2021 recovers PDF Accessibility tags, producing the appropriate accessibility properties in the resulting InDesign file. Finally, PDF2ID 2021 recognizes Printer marks in a PDF applying them  to the subsequent InDesign document.

PDF2ID 2021 requires macOS 10.10 or higher. It’s available immediately in the following configurations from the Recosoft web store (per license): PDF2ID; $299; PDF2ID Standard 2021 Upgrade, $99; and PDF2ID Professional 2021 Upgrade, $149. 

iOS

Pixamo has released Pixel Pro Golf, an arcade golf game for iOS and iPad. The game combines retro pixel-based graphics with realistic physics.

Players can play a few holes during a break at work or at home or play for hours. Classic gamers will appreciate the 8-bit-like graphics, while real world golfers will appreciate the game’s true-to-life physics.

Pixel Pro Golf requires iOS 10.0 or later. It’s free, but does offer in-app purchases.

Feral Interactive has released the XCOM 2 Collection for iOS.

With an all-new command interface crafted specifically for mobile play, it brings the tactical combat and exhilarating guerrilla warfare of XCOM 2: War of the Chosen to the iPhone and iPad. Commanders can now take the fight to the alien menace on the move, while executing orders with touch controls that have been refined for iOS and iPadOS devices. XCOM 2 Collection is available now from the App Store for $24.99.

Motif  — the Apple-approved personalized photo project app, has launched its completely redesigned iOS app, Motif 2.0, which features major upgrades for Motif users on an iPhone and iPad. Most notably, Motif 2.0 for iOS will feature a redesigned project editing experience created to make the process of designing photo books and calendars even more intuitive, saving users time as the holiday gifting season approaches.
