Apple’s new Emergency SOS Live Video feature, announced at WWDC, is gaining traction among first responder networks. Platforms like RapidSOS UNITE and Prepared are integrating the technology, which allows users to video chat with 911 dispatchers during emergencies. This addition to the existing voice call and text messaging capabilities aims to expedite emergency response times by providing visual information to responders.
Emergency SOS Live Video allows users to share context through streaming video and recorded media. In the middle of an emergency call, participating emergency dispatchers can send a request for a user to share live video or media from the user’s camera roll over a secure connection, making it easier and faster to get help.
This is all part of Apple’s bigger push to add safety features in recent years, including Crash Detection, which was introduced on the iPhone 14 and newer and later added to the Apple Watch Series 8, Ultra, and the second generation SE. iPhone 14 and 15 users also get Emergency SOS via satellite, which can send texts and your location to emergency responders, even if you have no cell signal.
